History/Mandate
The General Services Department was established in 2015 in line with the Federal Government Policy on restructuring and establishment of additional Departments in Ministries, Departments and Agencies. The Department is responsible for the creation and sustenance of conducive working environment for staff and the maintenance of movable and immovable properties of the scheme and management of NYSC Landed Property Nationwide.

Mission Statement:
Providing exceptional support and comprehensive services to enhance productivity through effective facility management, maintenance and logistical support while fostering a culture of collaboration, good health and safety at workplace.
Departmental Divisions And Units:
The Department has Three (3) Divisions and Seven (7) Branches:
The Divisions:
- Maintenance
- General Services
- Occupational Health, Safety and Environment.
The Branches:
- Maintenance Services
- Plant and Equipment
- Stores Management
- Transport Administration
- Facility Management, Office Space Allocation and Utility Services
- Security and Cleaning Services.
While the Divisions are headed by Deputy Directors, the Branches are headed by Assistant Directors respectfully.
Functions of General Services Department
The functions of the Department include among others:
- Maintenance: Maintenance of Refrigerators, Air conditioners, Electrical and Plumbing works, Office Complex and management of NYSC Landed Property Nationwide.
- Transport Administration: Maintenance of vehicles, ensure compliance to Government Policies on vehicles, mobility of staff and property.
- Security: Ensure the security of Staff, Corps Members and Government property in all NYSC formations.

- Plant and Equipment: Maintain and ensure the functionality of plant (generators) and equipment in all NYSC formations.
- Store Management: Receipt of procured items, custodian of Store items and issuance of store items.
- Occupational Health and Safety for Personnel: Enhancing productivity through occupational health and safety compliance including a need for safe and conducive work environment for all personnel.

- Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC).
Prospects
- Installation of two (2) Elevators to complement the existing two.
- Decentralization of the NYSC Central Stores into Zonal /regional arrangement to ease transportation and minimize risk.
- Computerization of Stores in the State Secretariats and integration of same with the Central Stores platform.
- Construction of additional Office accommodation within the NDHQ Complex.
- Acquisition/mounting of CCTV for security purposes in the Central Stores/ICT Office at Area 11.
- Training of Staff on fire prevention/safety.
- Morning vehicle routine checks.
- Adequate and frequent maintenance of all vehicles creates long life span of the vehicles.
- Training and retraining of Driver’s to enhance their efficiency and productivity.
- Insufficient number of vehicles especially Ambulance in the Scheme.
- Training of NYSC Drivers nationwide.
- Production and issuance of Uniform to NYSC Drivers nationwide.
- Installation of CCTV camera in all Orientation Camps
- Installation of fire water hydrant in all Orientation Camps.
- Installation of IP based intercom in NDHQ and all NYSC Secretariats.
- Purchase of fire fighting vehicle and construction of mini fire station at the NDHQ.
